Nurse Scholarship Story Spotlight: Brittany Cox

Since 2003, LOHF awards scholarships to deserving students who are beginning their nursing education, as well as students who are looking to advance their nursing careers in an effort to improve care for everyone in Lancaster County. During that time, we have given out more than $1.2 million in scholarship money, and we are pleased to continue to support nurses in our area as they begin or continue their education. This year, we invested $61,125 in the education of 28 local nursing students and we are proud to highlight some of them in our Nurses Scholarship Recipient Series!

At an early age, Brittany Cox learned “unconditional love, sacrifice, and how difficult it is to be powerless over something and someone that you are responsible for.” Escaping an unhealthy family situation at 18 years old, Brittany fought and won custody of her 15-year-old twin brothers 3 years later. Brittany began her adult life in search of a stable home, education and a career. She completed her LPN clinical courses while simultaneously homeschooling her two brothers.

Through perseverance, maturity, and a positive attitude, Brittany has given herself the power to achieve her dream — becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). Brittany was able to recognize an unhealthy situation and not only remove herself, but also give her brothers the opportunity to do the same. “Since becoming a nurse, many experiences like this have far exceeded the goals I imagined for myself… I am humbled and in awe of how much my nursing experience has shaped me thus far.” She’s confident in being able to care for others, as well as herself.

As a recipient of the LOHF Nurse Scholarship, Laura is pursuing her RN degree at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences.
