Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring Strength, Resilience, and Community Leadership-Barney Ewell’s Legacy

February is a time to celebrate Black History Month and reflect on the remarkable contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and trailblazers. At Touchstone Foundation, we recognize that history is a powerful teacher—it reminds us that resilience, determination, and community support can help us overcome life’s toughest obstacles.

This belief is embodied in our Rise Above Youth Summit, a transformative partnership with the YWCA. This initiative empowers young people by equipping them with the tools to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create positive change in their communities. Just as history has been shaped by those who pushed forward despite adversity, today’s youth are writing their own stories of success.

A Story of Strength: Barney Ewell’s Legacy

When thinking about resilience and determination, we are reminded of Henry Norwood “Barney” Ewell, a Lancaster legend whose journey continues to inspire generations.

Ewell faced numerous challenges throughout his life. Illness, racial barriers, and the disruption of his Olympic dreams due to World War II did not deter him. Instead, he pushed forward relentlessly, setting world records and eventually earning gold and silver medals at the 1948 Olympics.

His legacy extends beyond his victories on the track. Ewell was a champion for his community, committed to uplifting others and inspiring them to strive for greatness. His story is a powerful testament to the strength of persistence, passion, and the support of a strong community.

Empowering the Next Generation Through the Rise Above Youth Summit

Just as Barney Ewell demonstrated the importance of perseverance and community support, we at Touchstone Foundation believe in empowering young people to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.

Through the Rise Above Youth Summit, we offer opportunities for youth to:

  • Earn Certifications: Participants gain valuable skills through programs such as Teen Mental Health First Aid.
  • Develop Leadership Skills: Youth are encouraged to start mental wellness clubs in their schools, fostering a culture of support and advocacy.
  • Train as Mentors: The summit provides training for young people to serve as peer mentors, building strong support networks.

In collaboration with the YWCA, we deliver a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip young leaders with the skills and knowledge they need to become changemakers in their communities.

A Legacy of Strength and Community

This Black History Month, we honor the legacy of leaders like Barney Ewell, who exemplify resilience, strength, and the power of community. We remain dedicated to investing in the next generation—ensuring they have access to the tools, support, and encouragement needed to build a future filled with opportunity, equity, and success.

Join us in supporting and elevating young people. Together, we can create a legacy of strength, resilience, and empowerment.
