Nurse Scholarship Story Spotlight: Heather Fickes

Since 2003, LOHF awards scholarships to deserving students who are beginning their nursing education, as well as students who are looking to advance their nursing careers in an effort to improve care for everyone in Lancaster County. During that time, we have given out more than $1.2 million in scholarship money, and we are pleased to continue to support nurses in our area as they begin or continue their education. This year, we invested $61,125 in the education of 28 local nursing students and we are proud to highlight some of them in our Nurses Scholarship Recipient Series!

For most of us, there has been a moment, person or place that has affected our lives greatly. For Heather Fickes, as little girl she spent time with in elementary school has sculpted her dreams of a career in healthcare. “I remember that every day, instead of going out with the other kids to recess; I would go into [the IU-13] room and spend time with the children there… She was smaller than me, with hands stiff and twisted by her condition, but her smile I carry with me to this day.” Heather looks back on this memory and describes it as an experience that allowed her to find her purpose in life.

Heather’s commitment to completing her Registered Nursing (RN) degree is shown through her perseverance and strong nature. As a mother of two young children, Heather has still managed to attend school part time and work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for Bayada Home Health in their Pediatrics Division. She has most recently been working with a client who is a quadriplegic, serving not only as a caregiver, but also an advocate. Heather still cherishes a photo of her and the little girl she used to visit with in school.

As one of the recipients of the LOHF Nurse Scholarship, Laura is pursuing her RN degree at Harrisburg Area Community College, Lancaster Campus.
